Face The Truth: Facebook Acquires ’Largest, Most Accurate’ Facial Recognition Software

By Henrik Palmgren | redice.tv

Facebook has now acquired a software start-up that specializes in recognizing faces in digital images.

Working with Facebook directly, Face.com, "The world’s largest and most accurate face recognition platform", will be used to identify photos on the social network giant. The software will be able to distinguish, search, and filter photos containing friends, celebrities, or other targets.

Face.com released a statement:

"By [...] joining their team, we’ll have more opportunities to build amazing products that will be employed by consumers – that’s all we’ve ever wanted to do."

"Like our friends at Facebook, we think that mobile is a critical part of people’s lives as they both create and consume content, and share content with their social graph.".

This new acquisition comes after Facebook paid $1 billion for the photo-sharing service Instagram.

An article from ZeeNews.com reports:

Face.com said its "mission is and has always been to find new and exciting ways to make face recognition a fun, engaging part of people’s lives, and incorporate remarkable technology into everyday consumer products."

Facebook has already hit some roadblocks when it comes to facial-recognition technology. The social network announced plans for photo-related facial recognition in December 2010, which was intended to make it easier for people to tag photos of friends.

While Face.com is quick to highlight the beneficial and benign aspects of the tech, measures should be taken to ensure the bundled programs do not infringe on personal freedoms or privacy rights.

Such privacy issues have long dogged the social media titan Facebook, especially after revelations that much of members’ data is used in unexpected ways - (On Facebook, ’Likes’ Become Ads, You Become Involuntary Shill), and also the reports that intelligence gathering bodies such as the NSA, FBI, and CIA have been monitoring such online network services.

Other ’personal data’ aps are available to Facebook, such as "Age Meter", which "enables you to take a photo or load an existing one and figure out the age of the person in it."

Soon, there will be NOTHING about you that Facebook doesn’t know.
