If you have arachnophobia, the fear of spiders, you might not want to watch this video, and if you watch this video, you just may end up becoming an arachnophobe. In Santo Antonio da Platina, Brazil, Erick Reis was shooting an engagement party for friends, and when he went outside, he saw an incredible sight. Hundreds, perhaps thousands of spiders hanging from utility lines in what apparently is one giant web, making it look at times as if it was raining spiders. The video is a tad long, but you only need a minute or so to get the idea:"I’ve never seen anything like it before," Reis said.
According to the YouTube post, which has gone viral on Reddit, Marta Fischer, a biologist specializing in spiders at the Pontifical Catholic University of Parana, said the phenomenon is normal and occurs mainly in the cities of Sao Paulo.
"This type of spider is known to be quite social," she said.
They are usually in trees by day, and in the early evenings work together to construct giant sheets of webs to trap insects. Reportedly, they are officially known as "social spiders" called Anelosimus eximius.
Hey, at least they’re social.
