Our new president, Herman Van Rompuy, has wasted no time in revealing the magnitude of his aspirations.At his first press conference, he announced that he wanted the EU to return to “the economic and social agenda”. He hailed 2009 as “the first year of global governance”: a reference to the wrong-headed G20 agenda. He went on to describe the Copenhagen climate summit as “another step towards the global management of our planet”. So much ambition – and the chap hasn’t even taken office yet.
What he ought to be doing instead, of course, is this.
