The problem of police brutality is hardly limited to the US, but Israeli police violence receives little attention in the media by comparison.That all started to change this past summer when an American citizen was visiting his Palestinian family in the city of Shuafat, a Palestinian Arab neighborhood of East Jerusalem. A shocking video of the police brutality went viral which recorded Israeli police brutally beating 15-year-old Palestinian-American Tariq Abu Khdeir.Tariq was the cousin of Mohammad Abu Khdeir who had been burnt alive in East Jerusalem just before that, which led to Tariq’s visit in the aftermath of his cousin’s death.Israeli police can be seen in the video detaining Tariq, handcuffing him and beating him, kicking and punching him over and over, even though he offered no resistance.Handcuffed and lying on the floor, Tariq was eventually dragged away by the police who still didn’t realize he was an American citizen.Once the videos of Tariq’s beating surfaced it seemed that Americans finally began paying a little more attention to the rampant problem of police brutality in Israel and the occupied territories.
