Louisiana declares state of emergency due to massive oil spill

Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal has declared a state of emergency as a massive oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico continues to move towards the state’s coast.
The slick was some 16 miles off Louisiana in the Gulf of Mexico in the wake of last week’s oil rig explosion, according to the US Coast Guard.
The state of emergency declaration allows state agencies to thoroughly prepare for an emergency, and allows federal agencies to be deployed if needed.
The oil spill has the potential to become one of the worst in US history, the Coast Guard had warned.
On Wednesday, officials estimated that the amount of oil spilling into the Gulf from three underwater leaks after the oil rig explosion increased to as much as 5,000 barrels, or 210,000 gallons, a day -- five times more than what was initially believed.
