A major yoga studio in Austin, Texas has been forced to cancel its annual anniversary Bollywood-themed costume party after some complained that the event was “offensive” to South Asians.
In a mass email sent out to the studio’s clients, the owners explained how they were forced to cancel the event in order to satisfy, “some people who felt the theme of our anniversary party was offensive to South Asians as they see it as cultural appropriation.”
“Because we are so deeply immersed in the culture and teachings of India, it never occurred to us that there was potential for others who might attend this party to not be culturally sensitive, and possibly dressing in a way or acting in a way that could be offensive to others,” states the email.
“After a lot of deliberation, soul searching, tears and stress, we have decided to to cancel the Bollywood party, because we are deeply saddened by what has happened and under no circumstances want to cause harm to others. I know many of you will want to have a party anyway, after all there is much to celebrate and be proud of. We have considered doing this. However this has been extremely depleting for us personally. We do not have the energy (physical or emotional) to plan a brand new party. It would be a reminder of what has happened and we would rather move forward.”
Despite the fact that the costume party was a celebration of yoga and Indian culture, it was still derided as insensitive by some. The complaints came from South Asians – Indians themselves were not even offended by the event.
The yoga studio also faced accusations of racism last year when a student wore an eskimo costume to a studio Halloween party.
The incident underscores how political correctness is being weaponized as a tool to demonize free speech and impose totalitarian-style thought crime. By exploiting anthropology and playing races off against each other, just as intelligence agencies and empires have done throughout history, this new form of cultural marxism serves to divide and conquer.
Staff members at the studio are still being harassed over the party even after they cancelled the event. We have also learned of other businesses in the Austin area that have faced similar retribution.
The incident represents the latest example of political correctness gone wild on the same day Infowars reported that schools in Lincoln Nebraska are training teachers to avoid referring to pupils as ‘boys and girls’.
There have been innumerable other examples of costume parties being targeted after accusations of “cultural appropriation,” including at a University in Birmingham, England which last year banned the wearing of sombreros because they were deemed to be racist towards Mexicans.
If we are to embrace the notion that celebrating other cultures is in face offensive and even racist, dressing up as cowboys should also be banned.
