Media Matters chief: Trump 'schlong' comment is racist too

Donald Trump's offhand comment this week about Hillary Clinton getting "schlonged" in the 2008 Democratic presidential primary was a racial dog whistle suggesting that Barack Obama is a "black rapist," according to Media Matters founder David Brock.

"What we're going to see — and what we got a taste of last night — was the misogynistic attacks on Hillary Clinton," Brock, the founder of the pro-Clinton super PAC Correct the Record, said Tuesday on MSNBC.

"[It] also had a racial appeal as well," he added. "The idea of a black rapist, basically, using the schlong to defeat Hillary. I think that's what that's really about."

Trump, who currently leads the entire GOP presidential pack in most polling, created a media firestorm Monday when he joked at a campaign event that Clinton got "schlonged" in the 2008 Democratic presidential primary by then-Sen. Barack Obama of Illinois.

The Clinton campaign has since responded by saying that there's no place for "degrading language" of that type in America's political discourse.

Brock continued Tuesday, arguing that the only reason why Donald Trump is doing so well in the polls is because there's so much "hate" in the conservative base.

"It's really deeply troubling that the base of the party likes what they see in Trump," he said. "It's hurting Republicans."

"I think we're seeing an entirely different Republican Party in this cycle," he added. "This is not really an ideological movement — his followers are not especially right-wing. They're angry and they're filled with hate."

Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, is unhappy that the Washington Post published a cartoon this week that portrayed his daughters as apes, and he continued his criticism Wednesday by referring to the newspaper as a "lapdog" of the Democratic Party.

"Seems like a better idea for a cartoon: Hillary and her lapdogs," the Texas senator said in a tweet.

The tweeted message depicted Democratic front-runner Hillary Clinton walking two dogs. The first dog is labeled "The Washington Post," and the second dog is labeled "The New York Times."

The tweet comes after the Post's Ann Telnaes declared Tuesday that Cruz's daughters, Caroline, 7, and Catherine, 5, are "fair game" after they appeared with their father in a Christmas-themed video.
