Poll Shows Swedes Want King to Abdicate

A majority of the people of Sweden want King Carl XVI Gustav to abdicate and hand over power to Crown Princess Victoria in the next decade, according to a recent poll.The Internet poll, published in the Swedish daily Expressen, was conducted shortly after new reports were printed about the king's womanizing and shady connections.
Some 59 percent of the respondents said that the king should abdicate and only 29 percent believe that their king should reign until his death.
Thirty-two percent of the people polled said they had little or very little confidence in the king, compared to just nine percent for the crown princess.
The king reached the official retirement age of 65 last month but has said he has no plans to abdicate in favor of his 33-year-old daughter.
The latest poll confirms the results of other recent surveys and was conducted just days after commercial broadcaster TV4 claimed that its reporters had viewed pictures of the king at a strip club.
Meanwhile, a new book says friends of the king had been willing to pay large sums of money to block the publication of pictures of him in compromising situations.
At least one of the Swedish king's friends reportedly contacted an alleged mafia boss to ask for help in negotiations with the strip club owner in order to prevent him from making the pictures public, according to the book.
The royal court in Stockholm has demanded that TV4 show the pictures detailed in its report.
