Tree of Being
We all are beings of many levels. Our body, our surface personality, our waking identity and our memories in time are just the surface levels of who and what we are.
Picture a tree covered with leaves. The leaves cover the surface of the tree. The reason that the tree grows leaves is in order to be able to catch as much sunlight as possible. The more leaves that the tree has, the more sunlight it can catch to nourish its organism.
But trace the leaf down a bit and you come to a green stem, that eventually becomes a woody stem, and a little bit down you will come to where the branch divides to support stems of other leaves. Go further down, and you will find a deeper source, a branch that divides into branches. Further down, further and further and you make come to where the trunk divides into several great limbs, and then to the trunk and to the roots, which are the Source of life for all of the leaves.
Our ''conscious'' minds and our bodies are like the leaves of the tree. Each leaf is a distinct individual. At that level we are the most individualized.
Just as the leaves face outward to gather sunlight to nourish the tree, our individualized selves face ''outward'' to gather life experience, which nourishes the greater organism.
Our bodies exist in Time and Space. But our deeper levels of being are outside of Time and outside of Space -- in other words, have no physical location and no temporal location. At this point, you are in direct psychic contact with the other leaves of the same branch. Branches represent people linked in the same culture, nation, religion, history, etc. And where the tree analogy breaks down is that on a tree, a leaf is joined to just one branch, but you, as an individual ''leaf,'' can join to many branches. You ever learn about another culture or time and feel yourself psychically tuning in to the spirit of that world? You are psychologically joining with that collective spirit when you do that. All cultures, nations, religions, etc., are thought forms, but thought forms are real. Some very powerful people have even originated such thought forms all by themselves, via ''fiction,'' that have so much energy that they feel real to those who connect to them.
These collective ''branches'' can have their own illnesses (or rather, challenges), and when they do, everyone who belongs to that ''branch'' is affected. For example, if the branch of collective consciousness known as ''the United States'' or the branch known as ''Western Civilization'' or the branch known as ''the human species'' has fallen out of balance, everyone who belongs to that branch will be affected.
From the point of view of the spirits (when I refer to ''the spirits,'' I mean those spirits who work actively in partnership with humans) a dysfunction or disharmony is not necessarily a ''bad'' thing. Each difficulty is a challenge to be solved, and that is how life evolves and grows. If you think about it, probably almost everything you consider fun is a bit difficult, involves a little bit of physical or mental challenge. Or a lot. Without difficulties and challenges, there would be no evolution.
There are different levels of healing, that work at different levels of being. Let us say that Western medicine, which concentrates on the physical, is the most surface kind. There is no way that Western medicine can work without some direct physical contact with the body, and it has to happen in the here-and-now. The Western practitioner has to be in the ''right place at the right time'' to do her or his work.
Then, just a little bit deeper, there are levels of energy/aura healing that work with the immediate energetic level of the body. That still requires some kind of physical time-and-place contact. And deeper are levels of ''psychological'' healing that are slightly more divorced from the here-and-now ... you could do it on the phone (divorced in space) or write a letter which the person might read after you are dead (divorced in time).
Get much deeper, and physical space and time become irrelevant.
Healing happens at many different levels, because disfunction and disharmony occur at many different levels, from the most surface level to the deepest levels, which are outside of time and outside of space.
Healers tend to specialize in certain levels. It is something like -- everyone over 40 or so should appreciate this analogy -- the way after a certain age, your eyes more or less freeze at a certain distance focus. If you read a lot, your eyes will figure that that is your favorite distance and freeze you nearsighted. If you look more at faraway things, your eyes will be more used to being farsighted.
In my experience it is sometimes difficult for healers who work at different levels to communicate with one another about their work. Because, imagine if glasses had never been invented, and imagine that people were born with the state of vision (frozen on one focus) they have by age 50 or so, people with different degrees of nearsightedness and farsightedness would have different kinds of reference points about the world.
Somewhat similarly, some people can focus best on the purely physical level, some on the very-close-to-physical-level, and so on on down to very deep levels of the individual ''subconscious'' and deeper into collective levels of consciousness, and down to those whose focus is primarily planetary-level healing.
Now, if you are one of those relative few who can have out-of-body experiences while maintaining a focus on the physical, time-and-space world, then you may be able to do physical time-and-space-based healing even with your physical body far removed.
But in my experience, most remote healing deals with deeper levels of illness than the immediate physical/energetic.
Now, what does this imply about the spiritual development of the individual who can do it?
Well, in order to work at these deeper levels consciously, you have to have a more or less active contact between your ''conscious'' mind and those deeper levels. That is the tool for that kind of healing. It is also a tool for your own personal spiritual development. Whether you actually =use= it for your own personal spiritual development, however, is up to you.
And the fact of having that contact, that awareness of your spirit, does not in and of itself mean that you are more spiritually developed than someone who is not in such awaareness. Rather, it means that for the work that you are doing in this lifetime, this is a tool that you needed to have.
A life devoted to service to others and to making the world a better place implies a high level of spiritual development, and so a career as a healer implies that too. But the level at which one does healing does not necessarily tell you about the level of spiritual development that one has.
Nor, for that matter, does the presence or absence of personal problems in one's life tell much about one's level of spiritual development. Overcoming life challenges brings spiritual growth and learning, just as managing to lift heavy weights brings muscle growth and overcoming difficult mathematical challenges brings growth and learning in those areas.
And if one has overcome a certain problem oneself (whether a math problem or a life problem), one is in a better position to empathize and help others with similar problems.
So it is difficult to make judgments about another's level of spiritual development based on the problems that they do or don't have in their personal life ... or based on the kind of healing they do, either.
Just a few comments based on my own observation, There are. of course, many aspects and levels that i don't know. Others of course may have different experiences and observations, and it doesn't mean they are contradictory, just that this is a big universe.
