Whites Are Underrepresented Among Mass Shooters

The problem is not angry white men.

Ever since Stephen Paddock shot 58 people to death in Las Vegas, we have been hearing how dangerous white men are. Chauncey Devega of Salon wrote an article with the headline “America’s white man problem.” CNN says we have “silently accepted the rage of white men.” The San Francisco Chronicle says “White men with guns are America’s real terrorists.”

They’re wrong. Non-whites with guns are the problem. Blacks are only 13 percent of the population, but they commit half of all murders. And despite all the talk about angry white men with assault rifles, in a typical year, only 200 to 300 people are killed with rifles. More people are beaten to death with hands and feet than shot with rifles, and about five times as many people are killed with knives as with rifles.

Mass shootings are relatively rare, but the media tell us whites are the problem, so the sooner they are disarmed the better. The left-wing site Mother Jones has compiled an exhaustive list of mass shooters and classified them by race. Mother Jones takes a surprising view of who counts as “white.” A cursory review of their list shows that they consider Elliot Rodger—who described himself as “half white, half Asian” in his manifesto—to be white. Mass-shooter Abdelkrim Belachheb was born in Morocco, and a Mother Jones profile notes that John Zawahri was born to Lebanese immigrants, but Mother Jones thinks they’re white as well.

In addition, Mother Jones excludes “shootings stemming from more conventional crimes such as armed robbery or gang violence,” further skewing their statistics against whites.

In spite of these biases, Mother Jones’ own statistics show that since 1982, non-whites are about 60 percent more likely per capita to be mass shooters than those Mother Jones considers white.
