Desmond Tutu, 2 other laureates contest EU’s Nobel Peace Prize

Archbishop Desmond Tutu and two other Nobel Peace Prize laureates are contesting the awarding of this year’s prize to the European Union, saying the 27-nation bloc contradicts the values associated with the prize.

Tutu of South Africa, Northern Ireland’s Mairead Maguire and Adolfo Perez Esquivel from Argentina demand that the prize money of 8 million kronor ($1.2 million) not be paid out this year.

In an open letter to the Nobel Foundation in Stockholm, the three laureates say that the EU is "clearly not one of the ’champions of peace’ Alfred Nobel had in mind" when he created the prize in 1895.

The letter, a copy of which was acquired by the AP on Friday, says awarding the prize to the EU does not "realize Nobel’s demilitarized global peace order."
