Eastern Japan Great Earthquake Disaster, a month on

As powerful aftershocks rock Japan one month after the 9.0 earthquake and tsunami disaster, "Higashi Nihon Daishinsai", Japan’s struggles continue.

"Estimates of the Tōhoku earthquake’s magnitude make it the most powerful known earthquake to have hit Japan, and one of the five most powerful earthquakes in the world overall since modern record-keeping began in 1900."
"The tsunami resulted in over 300,000 refugees in the Tōhoku region, and shortages of food, water, shelter, medicine and fuel for survivors.
The National Police Agency has confirmed 13,219 deaths, 4,742 injured, and 14,274 people missing across eighteen prefectures." Source

Fire, earthquake and tsunami-damaged nuclear power plants, with radiation levels inside up to 1,000 times normal levels, released radioactive steam and material, as well as radioactive seawater used for cooling. How far and wide the spillage will travel and how it will affect the global environment is still being monitored.

While the reactors have now reportedly been contained, their radioactivity will affect the region for years and at present the water, food, animal life, and soil have all been contaminated.

The worst-case "nuclear apocalypse" scenario has at present been narrowly avoided, but for those still grieving in Japan, the battle to achieve a ’new normal’ has begun.

Grieving Japan was rocked yesterday by the strongest aftershocks since the catastrophic earthquake and tsunami.
Hours after the country paid silent tribute to those killed in the disaster a month ago, the 7.0 magnitude quake struck 100 miles north of Tokyo.
Crowds ran screaming from buildings as the ground shook and officials issued another tsunami alert.

Bosses at the stricken Fukushima nuclear plant said the latest quake briefly knocked out the power supply but no further damage was caused.
Two of Tokyo’s airports were closed temporarily though there were no reports of casualties.

The official death toll has reached 13,000 after the 9.0 magnitude quake on March 11 which triggered the tsunami. The final figure is expected to be around 25,000.

Fukushima governor Yuhei Sato led a memorial service in the district at 2.46pm local time, the moment the earthquake had struck a month ago.

He said: “My chest has been ripped open by the suffering and pain that this disaster has caused the people of our prefecture. I have no words to express my sorrow.”

Up to 80,000 people living near the plant have been evacuated and as radiation continued to leak yesterday the government urged more to leave.
