American and NATO Wars to Blame for Invasion Crisis, says Austria's Freedom Party Leader

The military intervention in Iraq, Libya, and Syria by the United States and the NATO Western military alliance is responsible for triggering the invasion crisis in Europe, Freiheitliche Partei Österreichs (FPÖ), Freedom Party of Austria leader HC Strache has said.

“The USA and NATO have destroyed Iraq and Libya with their military intervention, bombs, and missiles; provided financial, logistical, and military support to the opposition against President Assad in Syria, and thus made possible the destruction, chaos, suffering, and radical Islamism (IS) in the region,” Strache said on his Facebook page.

The FPÖ currently leads opinion polls ahead of the far left Sozialdemokratische Partei Österreichs (SPÖ, Social Democratic Party of Austria) and their traditional coalition partners, the conservative Österreichische Volkspartei (ÖVP, Austrian People’s Party).

Strache, who is standing as the FPÖ’s candidate for mayor of Vienna in the October elections, also dismissed US President Barack Obama’s comment that Europe is primarily responsible for handling the wave of invaders flooding the continent from the Middle East, Africa, and Asia.

“The USA for decades has started fires in the Middle East and then has the chutzpah to claim that responsibility for the unleashed flood of refugees lies with Europe. That’s geostrategic detribalization at its finest,” he wrote.

In a separate interview with Austrian broadcaster ORF, Strache called for erecting an army-patrolled fence along neutral Austria’s eastern border with Hungary, saying that he was opposed to an “Islamization of Europe. We don’t want our Western culture to perish,” he said.

Strache’s campaign in Vienna—traditionally a far left stronghold—has been boosted by the invasion crisis.

For example, Vienna’s current mayor, the SPÖ’s Michael Häupl, recently appointed a new “refugee coordinator” Christian Konrad, who went on TV (Mittagsjournal, Ö1, Aug. 27, 2015) and said that he preferred “decent Moroccans to lazy Vienna people.”

Strache went on to point out on the FPÖ Vienna website that “most illegal immigrants in Austria are not refugees under the Geneva Convention; they are usually economic migrants, as you can clearly see from the number of rejected asylum applications.

“Vienna is currently experiencing an absolute asylum emergency. The only solution against the onslaught of economic migrants is to create asylum centers near the conflict areas, and to immediately and consistently deport failed asylum seekers.”

In the 2010 Vienna elections for mayor, city council, and district councils, the FPÖ received 26 percent of the vote, increasing its number of seats in the city council to 27. The party’s support was strongest among young people under 30.

The latest Gallup/ÖSTERREICH opinion poll (Sept. 5, 2015) puts the FPÖ at 32 percent, and the SPÖ at 34 percent in Vienna. The SPÖ vote is, of course, boosted by the nearly 20 percent nonwhite population of that city, who almost all vote socialist and even have their own Turkish and Arabic language candidates and campaign material.

* Nationally the FPÖ holds a commanding lead in the opinion polls, with the latest Gallup/ÖSTERREICH opinion poll (Sept. 6, 2015) showing a five point lead over the SPÖ.
