At Least 2 Dead in Restaurant Shooting in Gothenburg, Sweden - Possible Gang Connection
Update: 2 dead and 8 hospitalized according to most recent reports. Deaths are expected to rise.Several news outlets report that several people were shot inside a restaurant in the city of Goteborg late Wednesday and at least two of them have died, Swedish police said.
Police said in a statement that an automatic weapon is believed to have been used in the shooting. They had no details on any suspects as of yet.
The shooting happened in the immigrant dense Biskopsgården suburb of Gothenburg, Sweden's second largest city. The neighborhood has a history of gang violence, said police spokeswoman Ulla Brehm.
She said it was too early to speculate on the motive but said there were indications that the shooting was gang-related. This is a known problem area. The Swedish police recently released a map of 55 areas where they publicly admit to having surrendered control to the criminal gangs. The suburb Biskopsgården is part of these 55 no-go zones as indicated by the report released by the Swedish police. (pdf in Swedish).
"There is absolutely nothing that indicates terrorism," Brehm said.
She said that at least two people were killed at the scene and several others taken to Sahlgrenska hospital, where a crowd of about one hundred people have gathered, believed to be family and friends to those who have been shot. According to SVT about 20 - 30 police have been trying to keep the tense and angry crowd calm outside the hospital.
One witness told Swedish broadcaster SVT that two men entered the restaurant and started shooting with Kalashnikov automatic weapons.
"I didn't have a chance to think about what happened. Then I saw that my friend was bleeding. I tried to stop the bleeding as well as I could with my hand," said the witness, who didn't give his name.
Police said the shooting happened inside a restaurant called Vår Krog och Bar, which means "our tavern and bar" in Swedish. According to its website, the restaurant opened in 1995 and also has a sports bar and a night club that's open on Fridays and Saturdays.
Editors note: Sweden is a changed country. These kinds of shootings were practically non-existent prior to the 90's, when it was largely a homogeneous country. Unfortunately all indications point towards a future Sweden where there will be more and more of these kinds of gang related shootings and general unrest. Very sad!
