A missing toddler caught up in a carjacking is found sitting alone in a freezing car park at 1am after cops refused to stop searching for her.

A policeman's vest cam captures the moment he shines his torch on little Caraline Leon-Alcocar, three, then scoops her into his arms.

She can be heard repeatedly saying she is cold in the footage.

Officer Chris Poccia tells her: "Let's get warm, OK sweetie? You're OK baby."

Cops and dozens of volunteers had been scouring the US city of Albuquerque for more than four hours after she vanished in a terrifying carjacking.

Caraline's mother had stopped briefly at a grocery store when the thief jumped inand sped off with the toddler strapped in the back.

Department spokesman Simon Drobik said it was an emotional call for the officers, many of whom have children of their own.

He said: "Those types of calls that come in, those are the No.1 priority call a police officer is ever going to respond to.

"Our worst fear is when a car gets stolen with a kid inside."

Officer Poccia was among those who refused to stop searching and eventually found her in a deserted car park in a seedy part of town.

She was sitting still on a concrete block, wrapped in her purple jacket with arms folded across her chest and a hood covering her head.

He said: "You could tell she was just really scared and really cold."

Police said the toddler was unharmed. It was not clear how long she had been outside in the freezing weather, but it was thought likely the thief dropped her off soon after stealing her mother's car.

The vehicle was found abandoned several miles away, prompting the huge missing child operation.

Police are hunting this suspected carjacker

Police were today continuing to hunt the carjacker and released a grainy CCTV image of a suspect.

If caught he is likely to face kidnapping and child abuse charges in addition to vehicle theft.
