“Mother” and “father” will gradually disappear from Ontario government forms.

Liberal MPP Glenn Thibeault introduced a motion, passed by the legislature Thursday, calling for gender-neutral language.

“It’s a motion that’s out there to make sure that government is continuing to look at what we can do to progress and make sure forms are inclusive,” Thibeault said.

Birth certificates will continue to refer to mother and father for now, he noted.

Thibeault’s motion says that the legislature supports replacing “gendered terminology with gender neutral and inclusive language on all government forms” as they are updated or replaced.

The documents should reflect the diverse nature of our province, “including, but not limited to replacing the terms ‘mother’ or ‘father’ with terms such as ‘parent’ or ‘guardian’ to better recognize the rights of LGBTQ parents and others,” the motion says.

PC Leader Patrick Brown said he favours inclusion, so he’s happy to add the words parent and guardian to government forms.

“But I don’t think you need to exclude the terms mother and father — why not include all the terms and that’s respectful of everyone,” Brown said.
