Paul Ryan Attempts to Save DACA – Sad!
On Friday, House Speaker and perennial nuisance Paul Ryan spoke out against Donald Trump’s alleged plans to scrap DACA.
Appearing on a radio station in his hometown of Janesville, Wisconsin, Paul Ryan urged Trump to reconsider ending the program. DACA, short for Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, allows over 800,000 illegal aliens to remain in the United States. And, contrary to what the name would suggest, the average age for DACA applicants is 20-years-old.
Ryan instead asked President Trump to allow the American legislative branch to handle the program, stating, “I believe that this is something that Congress has to fix.” But given Congress’ inability to repeal Obamacare – a stated Republican goal since the Affordable Healthcare Act was passed – this would be a great way to ensure DACA remains in place.
The Trump administration has been facing pressure from 10 state attorney generals to handle DACA. If the program is not ended by September 5, the states will pursue legal action.
How the president intends to handle DACA remains to be seen. Fox News reported on Thursday that the Trump administration planned to scrap the program, but White House spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee Sanders responded by saying that a final decision had not yet been reached.
In a statement to reporters on Friday, however, Trump hinted that a decision could be reached at some point this weekend.
