Southern Christian Leadership Conference Calls for Amnesty for Rioters, Looters in Baltimore

The Southern Christian Leadership Conference, the Baltimore People’s Power Assembly and the Bmore United Coalition are calling for people arrested during violent protests in Baltimore to be released.
According to the Rev. Cortly "C.D." Witherspoon of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, the protesters will march from McKeldin Square through the Inner Harbor demanding amnesty for those arrested during the Freddie Gray protests.
A Facebook page titled “Massive Protest Amnesty 4 All Arrestees – Drop the Charges – Baltimore’s Youth Are Not Thugs – Release all those arrested” announces the protest will be held Saturday, May 16 at 3:00 PM EST.
The Baltimore People’s Power Assembly admits the call for amnesty is for those who looted stores and destroyed private property.
“How can city officials equate property damage with the life of a human being? The youth of Baltimore need our support. We demand: Drop all charges and grant full amnesty! The people of Baltimore, especially the youth, need full employment at a livable wage, decent education and housing, not jails, racism and police terror,” the group explains in a statement.
According to a survey conducted by the Small Business Administration, more than 30 businesses and one home sustained major damage between April 25 and May 3 during the Baltimore riots.
Damages to businesses totaled $8,927,000, and to homes $60,000. The Baltimore Fire Department said the city documented more than 60 structural fires between April 27 and 28. The Mayor’s office said 144 vehicles were burned.
The Baltimore Police Department has promised an “increased police presence in the surrounding neighborhoods” this weekend.
“The plan is what it always is — to ensure the peaceful expression of people’s First Amendment Constitutional rights,” police spokesman Capt. Eric Kowalczyk told The Baltimore Sun.
