Egypt: constitution suspended

Source: euronews.com

Abdul Fatah Khalil al-Sisi, head of the Egyptian armed forces has announced that Egypt’s constitution has been suspended.

In his statement delivered at just after 21.00 hours in Cairo he said the new roadmap will also mean the head of the Constitutional Court will manage the affairs of state until a new president is elected.

A technocratic government will be formed and the Constitutional Court will start preparing for new presidential elections.

His statement said the army sees that the Egyptian people are calling it to support them, not to take power or to reign, but to serve the public interest and to protect the revolution. This is the message, he said, that the armed forces have received from all corners of Egypt.

Cheers rang out among the tens of thousands who had been protesting in Tahrir Square after the statement.
